About discipline
Backgammon is a strategic board game with an element of chance, which is included in the list of intellectual disciplines and has a centuries-old history. Within the federation, backgammon is considered a competitive discipline with clear rules, rankings and a tournament system.
The game combines tactical thinking, mathematical calculation and the ability to make decisions in conditions of uncertainty. That is why backgammon is actively developing as a sport with international tournaments and official rankings.
Rules of the game
Classic backgammon involves two players, each of whom has 15 chips. The game is played on a board consisting of 24 points.
Players take turns rolling two dice and moving their chips according to the rolled values. The main goal is to get all your chips across the board to the "home" zone and get them out before your opponent.
If a chip lands on a point occupied by one of the opponent's chips, it "beats" and returns to the game from its original position. The player must put all the beaten chips back into play before proceeding with other moves.
Tournament rules
Tournament backgammon is held in the format of matches up to a certain number of points (match play).
Basic principles:
the match consists of several games
a doubling cube is used
a scoring system is used depending on the result (regular win, backgammon, backgammon)
time limits are observed (timers)
Tournaments can be held in the following formats: single elimination, double elimination or Swiss system. All official competitions are held in accordance with the approved regulations of the federation.
Etiquette / code of conduct
Players are obliged to observe the principles of fair play and respect for the opponent.
Basic rules of conduct:
no in-game hints allowed
deliberately delaying time is prohibited
all actions must be clear and understandable
a judge or an organizer makes a decision regarding disputed situations
Failure to comply with ethical standards may result in a warning or disqualification.
Game formats
In backgammon, there are several game formats that are used depending on the level of the tournament and the goals of the players:
Match play— game to a certain number of points (main tournament format)
Money game— a game with conditional or real bets
Blitz / Speed— fast games with limited time
Online play— playing through online platforms
Each format has its own characteristics, but is based on the classic rules of backgammon.
